During World War II much of downtown West Sacramento was destroyed or damaged by bombing raids; however, most residents rebuilt following the war and westward migration began again in earnest after the war ended. By 1970 cumulative growth had pushed westward so far that Main Street ran through east end neighborhoods now within city limits; today most people identify themselves primarily as West Sacramentans or simply " Sacramentans ". Today significant portions of downtown still stand shellacked from bomb damage inflicted during World War II but are otherwise largely unscathed despite their proximity to Interstate 5 and other major highways; this contrasted starkly with how much downtown Oakland (Calif.) has been restored since 1945 following bombings Pearl Harbor left behind
