The first sources for ammunition mention a small arms factory that was located near what is now Forest Park. Ammunition production continued until 1906 when the plant closed because of lack of competition from other gunmakers. From 1907 to 1912, ammunition production took place at a new plant on I-5 north of town. This facility was destroyed by fire and never reopened. In 1945, ammunition manufacturing resumed at a new plant on County Road 5 in rural area around present day Mount Shasta. At this site, both rifle and artillery rounds were produced until 1984 when all operations ceased due to health reasons. Ammunition manufacture resumed in 1995 at a new facility on I-5 south of town after being out of business for several years. The current plant produces both rifle and shotgun rounds as well as armor piercing munitions such asHEAT rounds and anti-tank round developed by Raytheon Company Missile Systems division which is also responsible for development of Hellfire missile system in area

Despite this setback, Donald reopened the store for about 10 years before selling it to John Akeroyd who operated it until it closed again in 1984. Akeroyd's widow leased it back from San Francisco State University for use as their student union building from 1985-1994 before finally selling it to West Sacramento Mayor Bob McClatchy and City Manager Rick Griggs for $4 million on October 21, 1994. In 2002, McClatchy successfully campaigned to get approval from voters for a new city government with a mayor and four council members instead of three because he felt that having more power would lead to better decision making and be more accountable to residents On March 12th 2009 West Sacramento became one of only two cities (the other being Stockton) within California which had both a mayor and four councillors instead of three elected by popular vote alone As part of this change West Sacramento began providing services such as trash collection and watermain replacement outside of its jurisdiction

The city of West Sacramento was founded in 1853 by an American couple, Daniel and Rosalie Winchester. The area that is now the City of West Sacramento was part of Rancho de la Venta, a Mexican land grant given to José Joaquín de Alvarado in 1821. The city began as a small settlement on the east side of the river where today's Canal Street and I-5 are located. In 1865, the town was moved westward along what is now US 99 when the California Gold Rush began. During the 1800s, most residents in West Sacramento were Anglo Protestants from New England or Northern Ireland. However, over time there has been a growing Hispanic population, with some Latinos also living inWest Sacramento for generations. In recent years, West Sacramento has become known for its agriculture industry and its production of sorghum and corn.
