At that time, downtown business district (the Financial District) had become an important center for commerce while residences near Western Avenue began to be built up around Highland Park (now Silver Lake). The opening of Universal Studios in 1915 introduced a new era of movie production to West Hollywood; prior to that motion pictures were shot on location or prodcured through intermediaries such as RKO Radio Pictures Company or Paramount Pictures Corporation. Other early businesses included a clothes dryer and mattress store called Bedtime Stories (now Beddingworld). In 1939, investment banker Irving Krimsky purchased much of what remains today of Playfair Broadcasting Company - one of LA's earliest television networks - which he sold to American Broadcasting Company (ABC) for $2 million dollars cash plus assets including 15 acres (6 hectares) around Culver City where he planned to build his own Television City complex housing his new network studios and other production facilities; ABC renamed it ABC-TV fame was given to that corner spot on Vine Street between Sunset Boulevard and First Avenue North". Another major figure associated with early days in West Hollywood was Harry Heineman who represented movie exhibitors interests before the state legislature during various hearings on film censorship back then which led to passage of State Film Code No 1 in 1933 establishing regulations governing motion picture exhibition throughout California.. Another early pioneer here was Jack Valenti who founded Jaxon Productions together with partners Bob Hope, Mickey Rooney and my father – Billy Dean – all coming from Desilu Studios down near Warner Bros., Young’s Own RKO Radio Pictures being their 24th St studio lot back then). At about this time 2nd Ward Councilman Herb Caen recalled: "It used to be that when you went into West Hollywood you had either Pacific Palisades or Malibu Creek behind you" after an area formerly occupied by Canoga Park now lies within boundaries delimited by Reseda Boulevard on one side sandwiched between Mulholland Drive on the other side... This geographic separation served dual purposes: while Canoga Park enjoyed easy access to beaches through Malibu Creek - although not so accessible from Pacific Palisades - residents living northward along Reseda Boulevard were kept out ofMalibu Creek altogether." The 1960s saw some growth here as well with many people moving up from Watts or South CentralLos Angeles because there were better opportunities here than in those neighborhoods due to easier access to jobs, schools and hospitals etcetera. Some examples include Andy Warhol making art here overnights at his friend Bruce Davidson's house starting around 1965 until Warhol moved out in 1971; musician Neil Young started playing bass at age 12 at John Lee Hooker's home becoming musical heavy hitter later moving uptown into CBGBs starting around 1966; dancehall queen Divine Fierce began performing live around 1967; actress Mia Farrow moved out here temporarily while she finished filming her acclaimed but ultimately successful adaptation of Upton Sinclair's novel “Heart Of Darkness”; rock band Lenny Bruce played its final show at Fillmore Auditorium March 9th 1968 following years worth touring ..… Finally technological advances also played a role during these years as home video technology made ever more easily available recordings such as Bette Midler singing "I Will Always Love You" right outside your front door!
