During World War II much property was requisitioned for use by the military so most of what is now known as West Hollywood came about after hostilities ceased in 1945 when vast amounts of land became available for development following Japan's defeat. This included areas such as Mirror Lake where homes can still be seen today (although they are not actually within walking distance); Bel Air where several famous actors live today including Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant and Hepburn; Saugus Heights which served as an auxiliary airstrip used by U2 during their concerts at Candlestick Park; Universal Studios where Star Wars was created; CenturyLink Field – home stadium for LA Galaxy football games until 2007 –and more! In 1867, the first post office in West Hollywood was established. In 1912, the city incorporated and began to grow. The Los Angeles Times reported on December 4, 1913: "West Hollywood is an unincorporated community in southern Orange County, California, United States." The Santa Monica Pier became a popular tourist spot in the 1920s and 1930s. It was also home to several movie studios including Universal Studios and MGM. The area around the pier soon became known as "The Strip" for its number of casinos and nightclubs. In 1953, tumult within Communist China caused a massive social upheaval throughout Asia which led to riots in Hong Kong which spread to mainland China. This event has been called one of the worst disasters in human history. As a result of this event, West Hollywood sustained significant damage and lost many jobs.
