In 1911, there was an explosion at an ammunition factory in nearby Lompoc that destroyed many buildings and injured many people. This event is considered one of the most significant tragedies in West Hollywood’s history. The damage done by the explosion made it necessary for legislators in Los Angeles to pass laws regulating firearms. After World War II ended, gun control ordinances began being passed more frequently throughout Los Angeles County. These ordinances regulated how guns were sold, possessed, and used within city limits. In 1948, Mayor Frank Bevan banned handguns from all public areas including downtown Los Angeles due to concerns about crime rates being increased due to outlawing handgun ownership . However, Pistol Pete (a nickname given to Mr. Pistol) continued operating unbanished despite mayor Bevan’s ordershammering away at his shotgun range just outside of city limits . vandalism against Bevan’s campaign signs soon became commonplace as residents learned how easily they could purchase pistols without fear of arrest . On January 1st 1951 , Mr. Pistol won an injunction banning handgun ownership within city limits after 14 years uninterrupted operation
