Actress Jane Wyman used her home on Beverly Boulevard for studio purposes until she sold it to Columbia Pictures head Harry Cohn in 1951. With Cohn as president, Columbia produced some of America's most famous films such as "A Hard Day's Night", "The Godfather", "Ender's Game" and " Psycho". After years of struggles during the Great Depression, the town finally achieved widespread prosperity during World War II thanks to an injection of federal money into the economy through wartime production subsidies like lend-lease. However, this period also saw heavy social unrest which led to severe police crackdowns; one example was when Lenny Bruce was arrested while performing at The Palladium nightclub following a performance that drew criticism from then-Mayor Tom Bradley (later Ulysses S Grant). During postwar reconstruction efforts following World War II many businesses closed down or were relocated outside of town due to high competition from nearby cities like Culver City and Inglewood—a situation that only worsened with post-war growth patterns throughout Southern California. By 1955 nearly 60% of all jobs located within walking distance of Central Park were either factory jobs or services related to transportation (such as parking attendants), retailing or professional services rather than manufacturing or agriculture.
