The pre-Hispanic name of this area was Coyote Valley. It is said that the first European to visit this region was Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, who sighted a giant rabbit in 1602. The Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés discovered the area in 1519 and named it Santa Catalina de la California. In 1821, gold was found at Sutter's Mill in the Coyote Valley and development began. The town of Covina became an important stop on the Stockton - Northern California Railroad.
