In 1870, Winton Copley organized what became known as "The Pioneers", an effort to raise money for build a new home for himself and his family on land grants he had obtained from various ranchers in what is now Anaheim Hills. From here they founded many other towns throughout Orange County including Irvine and Garden Grove before finally settling in West Covina in 1909 when they purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) north of present day Covina Boulevard from David Ayeris for $1 million dollars with plans to start a new city there
The first Europeans to visit what is now West Covina were the Spanish in 1769. The area was part of Rancho San Gabriel de los Cahuillas, and was then granted to Alta California by Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena on November 30, 1819. In 1821, the land was divided between two parties, with J.P. Morgan receiving a portion which he donated to University of California at Davis in 1886 as a gift from his father John Pierpont Morgan Sr. In 1870, citrus fruits began being grown in the area and soon became an important economic development. In 1906, the city was incorporated as West Covina; it had been called Covina since 1851 when it was part of San Gabriel County. It has since seen growth into one of Southern California's most populous cities with over 160,000 residents today.
