In 1847, the area that is now West Covina was part of Rancho Los Alamitos. It was named for Lt. Gov. Manuel de la Vega y Cámpora, who had been appointed by Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna to survey the region in 1846. In 1850, when California became a United States territory, the land east of Descansada Creek and south of Gaviota Mountain became part of what is now Riverside County. In 1853, the portion west of Gaviota Mountain was detached from Riverside County and given to San Bernardino County. The name "West Covina" first appeared on a map dated October 1, 1859, which shows all of Los Angeles County including parts of Orange and Riverside counties as well as Imperial Valley
