West Covina is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 112,873 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of the San Gabriel Valley and within the city limits of West Covina are many affluent neighborhoods such as Garden Grove, Rowland Heights, and Monrovia. The original inhabitants of what is now West Covina were Ohlone people who hunted and gathered resources from mountains to the south and east. They also traded with other Native American groups including the Lenape in central New York. In 1769, Juan Manuel De La Hoz discovered oil in hills to the north and west of where modern-day West Covina stands. This led to increased development around this area as businesses began exploiting natural resources for profit. The first town site was laid out near what is now Montebello Boulevard and Northampton Avenue on November 3rd, 1878 by Jens Jensen Rasmussen.* In 1909, John Atherton founded Atherton Oil which would later become Chevron Corporation. He donated land for a new refinery on Monrovia Road which became one of America's largest refineries(*). The refinery would produce products such as gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, asphalt and more until it closed in 2007*. In 1924, Harry Chandler bought 5% of Chevron Corporation from John Atherton* (*). Today Harry Chandler Square (Cherry Hill Drive) contains many artifacts dating back to when Chevron Corp operated its refinery here! *Please see Pasadena History for more information about this exciting story!

The area that is now Covina was part of the Rancho Hondo Mexican land grant given to Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1836. The town began as a small farming community with a few homes and a post office. In 1888, Covina became the first city in Los Angeles County when it was incorporated.
