The name West Covina is derived from the Spanish words "covina," meaning cow or female calf, and "vina," meaning wine. The first settlement in what is now West Covina was made on Mayflower land by English colonists in 1769. The area that would become West Covina was developed as a agricultural community during the 19th century, with vineyards and wineries dotting the landscape. In 1887, when Hollywood began to grow rapidly and demand for space increased for movie theaters, portions of what are now North Hollywood and Van Nuys were annexed into West Covina. It wasn't until after World War II that suburban development took hold in west-central Los Angeles County; as a result of this growth, much of what is now East L.A., including most of West Covina center dating back to pre-war years has been lost or destroyed. Today, many people from east Los Angeles commute to west central LA for work or school; however, much of west-central Los Angeles still retains its rural feel due to its wide open spaces and lack of built up areas. In 1853, when California was admitted to the United States, it included what is now West Covina. The area that would become West Covina was part of Rancho San Diego de Alta, a grant from King Carlos III of Spain to Juan Bautista Vallejo. It was part of Mission San Fernando Rey (founded in 1776), and then Mission San Gabriel Arcángel (founded in 1823). In 1853, the land east of the railroad tracks became known as “the swamp” because there had been no water available for farming since before the Mexicans arrived. The first settlers were Spanish people who came overland from Mexico in groups called expeditions. One group made contact with Native Americans and traded goods. The second group came by boat and landed on shore near what is now downtown West Covina. They built a small mission which they named mission Concepción y Pico because they thought that this spot would be good for growing crops. At first, Muslims lived here too but eventually they left because of persecution by the Mexican government. Later on, Chinese people started arriving also but their status was not as respected as other races so they did not stay long. To make things easier for the pioneers who wanted to start a new life in this area, Governor Manuel Micheltorena created a lot of incentives including giving away free land and creating roads and bridges so that everyone could move around without fear of being chased away or killed by Indians or bandits. A school was also established here in 1868-69 by Father Jose Gomez de la Cruz with 30 students; it later increased to 60 students until it closed due to financial problems in 1901-1902. Today there is only an abandoned building remaining from this school’s days: The old Gymnasium building located at 5th Street and Western Avenue served as one endowment for both schools until 1984 when it became home to Stonington Community College after purchasing it from its previous owners/occupiers – East Valley Christian Academy & School District No 722 vowing never again to give up its history or use any taxpayer money ever again! Historical documents show that prior thereto same property had been used variously as an Evangelical church services center & daycare center (& variously occupied by various social organizations),various businesses taking place within view thereof during non-useable portions thereof thru out most recent incarnations (& final occupants: East Valley Christian Academy & School District No 722) w/ dwellings therein thruout latest incarnation!

The name "West Covina" is derived from the Spanish word "covela", meaning 'a place where fish spawn'. In 1915, the United States Postal Service established a post office in West Covina and developed it into an area with high-quality mail service. In 1929, the first movie theater in West Covina opened and continued to be used until it was closed in 1984. In 1957, the city of Los Angeles annexed part of East Los Angeles County and made West Covina within its boundaries. This led to an increase in population as people moved into what was now officially Los Angeles County. In 1978, two new schools were built within the limits of West Covina: North School District No. 1 (now known as “North Hollywood”) and South School District No. 2 (now called “South Pasadena”). Today,West Covina is one of Southern California's most vibrant communities with a rich history that still holds strong today.
