West Covina, California is a city in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 71,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Founded as a garrison town on Rancho San Jacinto in 1853 by U.S. Marines under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer for military purposes, West Covina became an agricultural center after the completion of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1885 and gradually lost its military significance until World War II when it became one of the largest Japanese American concentration camps in Southern California. After liberation by American forces in 1945, West Covina became a largely white community with few African Americans and limited economic opportunities until recent decades when its demographics have begun to change again with immigration and growth in Hispanic populations

By 1860 the Mexican town of San Fernando had sprung up around the mission school where Father José Gomez studied Chinese languages. This community was also the birthplace of American football fame! In 1863 a group of Englishman led by Captain John Sutter came across an area of high desert called present-day Kern County while exploring for gold near Bakersfield. They named their new settlement after themselves – Sutterville – because they thought it would be more difficult for Indians to get access to the land than Camp Woodstock (now Fresno). However, within a few yearsSutterville had become one of the most important towns in California because it became home to many farmers as well as miners seeking silver and gold deposits throughout Kern County Between 1850-1870 about 60% of all cotton grown in California was produced in Kern County The most important crop grown here was wheat which accounted for over 60% of total produce statewide Today Kern County is known for its wine industry although other major employers include aerospace manufacturing plants as well as service companies such as Walgreens Pharmacy
