West Covina is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 137,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Los Angeles County and the second-most populous city in the San Francisco Bay Area after San Francisco. West Covina was annexed by Los Angeles in 1909 and became an incorporated municipality in 1912. The area now known as West Covina was first settled by Native Americans, who called it Pico de la Hacienda because of its high hills. The site of present day West Covina was chosen for its strategic location on a crossing of two rivers that connected both sections of what would become Los Angeles County. Pico de la Hacienda had been used by Spanish missionaries to trade with the natives and as a military base during Mexican rule over California. In 1823, Rancho Niguel was sold to José Osuna for $4,000 from Manuel Nieto y Costilla, governor of Alta California. Jose's son Fernando bought it from his father for $8,000 in 1847 and renamed it Rancho La Habra para better reflect his new holdings within Los Angeles County. In 1857, when gold began being discovered near Olvera Street and Main Street in downtown Pasadena, wealthy investors rushed to find veins of gold throughout southern California while still under Mexican rule; they named their new town El Monte after one such investor – another Spaniard – Miguel Alemán Marquez (1813–1887). When news arrived that treasure had been found further north at Sutter’s Mill on January 6th, 1859 – less than two weeks before El Monte officially became a town – all but one family left El Monte for Gold Rush country just east of Pasadena along First Street where Sacramento Avenue runs today. They founded what would become Pasadena’s first post office at 5th & Market Streets on January 20th; hours after Gold Rush dollars were coined thereabouts! On February 2nd 1860 about 100 people gathered at Plaza del Arroyo located off Utopia Avenue northeast corner thereof to plant maize seeds which they expected would yield five bushels per acre grown under natural light with no irrigation or wind power available then or any time soon! After three years planting yielded only six bushels per acre due mainly to lack of water availability but also due to early frost damage! By 1865 more than 1125 acres had been planted yielding 10-12 bushels/acre under normal cultivation conditions! A group led by Captain John Clements went into business operating wagons carrying goods up Stockton Road between San Fernando Valley and Eastern Ventura Parish until October 1861 when route opened up through Orange Grove Canyon via Angels Camp thence down Redwood Rd past North Baldwin Ave all the way thro' Donner Pass finally arriving at Wagon Wheel about November 2nd near modern day Irvine Spectrum mall - making this trip one thousand miles round trip including stops enroute! A stage line ran from here all the way down Donner Pass until 1862 when final linkup with Union Pacific Railroad happened at Eureka Springs NevadanearpresentdayEureka
