Watsonville, California is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The name "Watsonville" was given to the settlement by Captain Francis James Watson in 1835 after he sighted a bear nearpresent-day Rosieres Creek. A post office called Watsonville was established in 1848, and remained in operation until it closed on November 15, 1955. In 1906, an agricultural fair was held at Winton Park which later became known as Golden Gate International Exposition (GWEx). In 1916–1917, during World War I, Watsonville served as an encampment for American troops stationed along the coast of Japan before their departure from that country. In 1920–1921 a series of general stores were built in downtown with assistance from local entrepreneur John D'Arcy Potter Sr.. After D'Arcy Potter's death in 1923 his son John D'Arcy Potter Jr., took over running the business until its sale to Alcoa Aluminum Company on October 1, 1951. On September 26 of that year Dickenson Air Force Base opened within walking distance of downtown and quickly became one of Northern California's largest employers with its production facilities for missiles and aircraft parts; this led to increased development around Dickenson AFB including new housing developments and businesses such as ABC News Center which now occupies what used to be Alcoa's main building on 13th Street between Market and King Streets across from MacArthur Library

Watsonville is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 24,713 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in Santa Clara County after San Jose and it is located on the west coast of San Francisco Bay. Watsonville was founded by European American settlers in 1849 as a small town on an uninhabited stretch of shoreline between Sausalito and Tiburon. In 1871 it became part of the newly created San Mateo County. The name "Watsonville" may be derived from John Sutter's discovery of gold there in 1848. The first post office called Watsonville was established in 1849, and was renamed to its current name in 1865 after General George Armstrong Custer who had fought with Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican-American War. The first store opened at 5th and Mission Streets in 1851, and soon thereafter began to grow as a result of numerous new businesses opening up along Mission Street alone. By 1860 there were twenty-four stores open within one mile (1 kilometer) of each other – all but two being run by women! Over time many more businesses cropped up throughout downtown; some still operate today including Bank of America, Applebee's or Safeway among others In 1870 the county seat moved from Sausalito to Watsonville due to population growth which made it necessary for an additional courthouse because Sausalito could not handle the increasing number of cases being brought before the court This first courthouse stood until 1906 when it burned down . A new courthouse was built on First Street near Coyote Creek Rd., which served until 1955 when that structure also burned down . The present day Courthouse Annex sits on top of what used to be District Attorney’s Office building which opened in 1912 In 1916 war broke out across Europe and quick decisions were needed about what kind of food would be able to get through customs given German forces had been encroaching into southern Switzerland for months prior So President Wilson appointed Rear Admiral William Farragut as Commissioner for Food Distribution with responsibility for ensuring adequate supplies reaching troops stationed abroad This gave rise to one local favorite saying “Farragut got his orders direct from Washington” No matter how you slice it, this story has something special about it World War I resulted in increased demand for flour so mill workers struck twice resulting in mass arrests over days/weeks beginning on September 15th 1917 followed by Packing House Riot August 29th 1919 Most prominent face involvement: James Connolly (DUP MP) https://www2a2a2a7f4e8c5d4bcd4ddedcbaabfdbe0e3ef/.png Post office closed November 1918 reopened January 1921 but stopped operations February 1st 1921 After WWI most business went away although some continued such as Kesselman’s grocery which continued until 1977 When Interstate 80 was built nearby they decided against coming back so their last store closed October 3rd 1984
Watsonville was founded in 1847 by George and Eliza Watson. The town was named for General John C. Fremont, who had come to California in 1846 as part of the Mexican-American War. The Watsonys were the first European settlers in what is now Santa Clara County. They founded a small community on the banks of the San Francisco Bay, about two miles south of modern day San Francisco. In 1850, they built a gristmill and started to trade with Native Americans. In 1861, they bought land near present-day Hayward and began to build a sawmill. By 1865, they had also erected a store and post office. In 1868, they sold their property at Hayward Creek for $10,000 to James W. Richardson Sr., one of the original investors in the Bay Area Railroad Company (BAR). The Richardsons operated a mill until it burned down in 1921; however, the Watsonville Mill still stands as an historical landmark downtown Harrisonburg.
