Watsonville was founded by Nathaniel S. Bacon on November 20, 1851 as a stagecoach stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route from Stockton to Sacramento. For many years it was one of the most populous towns in northern California due to its fertile soil and proximity to two major water resources: Tulare Lake and Merced River. However, production declines after World War II and today Watsonville has a population of 6,500 people who primarily engaged in agriculture or service jobs related to those industries. The first Europeans to visit what is now Watsonville were Spanish missionaries in 1769–70 when they noticed rich land near present-day Tulare Lake and named it La Selva de las Animaciones ( los animados land). The name may have been derived from an Indian word meaning "peaceful place." In 1851 Nathaniel S. Bacon founded what would become known as Watsonville with his wife Susannah Goode Bacon and their three young children; he had started out as a stageship driver on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Stockton and Sacramento.
