Watsonville is a small town located in Santa Clara County, California. The population was 3,382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Silicon Valley region. Watsonville has been home to some of the leading technology companies and businesses in the world including Apple Inc., Facebook, Google, and Twitter. The economy is based largely on agriculture and manufacturing. The first Europeans to visit what is now Watsonville were Portuguese sailors who sailed up the coast from San Francisco in 1542 looking for a route to Asia. They named their spot "Waterville" after one of their shipmates, William Watervale. In 1848 an American gold rush began in this area and thousands of men, women and children rushed into the hills seeking treasure. Many families returned with new land grants that became known as "the Hill Country." The earliest settler in what is now Watsonville was James Fenton who arrived in 1847 from Ohio. He built a cabin on a bluff overlooking Mission Bay which he named Fenton's Bluff after his friend James Fenton, Sr., who had come earlier that year with his brother-in-law Angus MacDonald to found Fremont City on Mission Bayou east of San Jose. By 1850 there were nine families living here: four Fentons, two Macdonalds, two Hahnemanns and one Wagner (later changed to Wagener). In 1852 John Sutter came down from Sacramento with 5500 acres awarded him by US President Fillmore for his participation in the Gold Rush at Sutters Landing northeast of San Jose. He started farming here soon after landing and naming his place Sutter's Gulch after himself and fellow pioneer George Sutter (1811-1874). Englishman Augustus Earle bought 880 acres near present day downtown Watsonville from Sutter in 1865; it later became known as Earle's Heights due to its high elevation and abundance of silver trees around about 1870.). Sutter's Gulch remained primarily agricultural until 1892 when local businessman Hiram Maxim bought 640 acres adjoining Earle's Heights for $10 per acre ($2 million today) because he believed that San Francisco would become too noisy for agriculture whereupon he resumed development which included erection of many large buildings still standing today such as the old State Capitol building (now part of City Hall), Masonic Temple (now Stonestreet Elementary School), city hall Annex (now home to Northern California University), several churches,ommodations for employees of various businesses nearby including Maxim’s bakery/canned food company THE MAYNARD COFFEE HOUSE AND WATSONVILLE HOTEL also built during this time period) witch continued operation until 1958 etc.. In 1911 developer Willard Hsieh purchased 340 acres southward along Coyote Creek from Earle for $5 per acre ($2 million today). Here he founded Hsieh & Sons Company which operated a number Of successful businesses such as lumber mills, real estate ventures etc.. During World War II many veteran families relocated here including those who originally settled at Coyote Pass Road west side prior to World War I which became Angel Stadium Drive following World War II Veterans Return Home Act passed by Congress On December 7th 1945 ..... After World War II many young people moved back into rural areas throughout America creating suburban sprawl all over but few places turned out quite so well like Watsonville did ..... Today much focus remains on agriculture although some modest retail developments have sprung up around town center .....

Watsonville is a census-designated place in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 9,932 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Watsonville is named after Samuel J. Watson, an early settler who had a rancho here in 1821. Watsonville was founded on May 12, 1897 by Hiram A. Smith and his wife Lillie Hildebrandt Smith with the goal of becoming a " Model City" for other agricultural towns to emulate. They named their new town after Samuel J. Watson, who had homesteaded here in 1821 and had been one of the original incorporators of Santa Clara County. In 1906, they changed its name to honor American physicist Edward Condon (1878-1957). The community developed quickly as word spread about its great variety of fruits and vegetables available in lightly populated areas near San Francisco proper. By 1912 there were two grocery stores and six restaurants in what was then only a small hamlet of about 100 people! The post office opened in 1916 and soon became known as the "Town Post Office". During World War II many local businesses participated actively in supplying munitions needs for the military throughout Southern California including producing food from local crops that were requisitioned for war purposes such as eggs, bacon, butter and cheese; even fruitcake! After the war ended many businesses closed but some continued operations until around 1970 when all but one business closed down because of competition from more modern warehouse complexes within walking distance or less! In recent years there have been efforts to revive much of this once vibrant community with new development outside town limits while also preserving some OFA-listed buildings which are significant historically/architecturally/functionally speaking
Watsonville was founded by Captain George Fenton in 1827. The town was named for John James Watson, an English scientist who discovered the structure of DNA.
