In 1835, John Cranch settled in what is now Watsonville and started a tannery which became one of Northern California's most important businesses. In 1868, Ebenezer Dowling built himself a two-story adobe home on present day First Street in what is now the downtown district. He later donated land for school and parkland including what is now bounded by Center Street (north), Polk Street (south), East Avenue (east), Second Street (west) and Yorba Linda Drive (south). The first post office opened in 1892 with Elisha Gutherson as its first employee; it operated out of an old store building on Third Avenue until 1908 when a new building was erected at nearby South Park Square. The late 1800s saw great growth for Watsonville with many immigrants coming to work in agriculture or construction throughout the state of California. Watson Day" in recognition of all that has been accomplished since Mr. Watson established our city .
