Watsonville was founded in 1848 by Captain George Fife and his wife, Mary. The town was named for the navigator Lieutenant James Watson who discovered California in 1775. The first post office was established in 1853. In 1865, the United States Post Office moved from Monterey to Watsonville and remained there until it was discontinued in 1907. The first school in Watsonville was built on a lot near what is now corner of First Avenue and Harrison Street. It opened in 1850, and served as the parish school for many years. In 1886, a new school building was erected on Eighth Avenue between First and Second Streets. This building still stands today as the only extant pre-K-12 educational facility in Watsonville. In 1915, the San Francisco Bay Bridge Authority began construction of the Golden Gate Bridge over the San Pablo Bay watershed and soon after requested that all mail be delivered through Watsonville instead of via Monterey or Sausalito due to its greater population density at that time. The U.S.-owned Northern Pacific Railway also offered service to Watsonville from its station at Third Street and Broadway (later renamed Powell Street) which helped support early growth of this agricultural center during World War I when goods traveled along both bridges across Highway 101 (now Interstate 5). However, by 1922 Northern Pacific had abandoned their service because of safety concerns with trains crossing high water levels on the span; traffic diverted to other routes such as Highway 1 west of town or Interstate 5 east of town before reaching county seats such as Salinas or Visalia respectively. However, by 1938 enough residents had formed a group called "Watsonvillians for Better Transport" to push for reopening Northern Pacific's line from Third Street eastward intotown through downtown along Highways 680/680A which would have cut down on commuting time from Salinas to Alameda County while also providing more 21st century amenities like express lanes for automobiles In 1941 WACOM continued operations outbuildings located at Seventh Avenue near Market Square until displaced by Hewlett-Packard's Palo Alto Research Center later that same year however Hewlett-Packard eventually vacated those buildings too following World War II Though some heritage features associated with HP remain including an original HVAC system dating back to 1911 installed inside one of these buildings currently used as offices
