The Mission Santa Clara de Asís, founded in 1768 by Franciscan missionaries, was one of the most important missions in Alta California. It was followed by Mission San Francisco de Asís, which became known as Mission San Gabriel Arcángel due to its high altar and striking spire (the original structure still stands). The mission district included much of what is now Fresno County and parts of Kern County today. In 1807, during Mexican rule over Alta California, Father José Placido y Costilla erected a cross at what is now called Civic Center Square in downtown Watsonville as part of his effort to convert Native Americans living near Stockton into Christians. In 1887, a small community of farmers and their families settled in the rolling hills outside Watsonville. The town was named after Edwin W. The growth of the town was due to its location on the main route between San Francisco and Sacramento, as well as its close proximity to water resources like ranches and wells. Watsonville’s economy grew through agriculture, manufacturing, trade, and service industries. In addition to its namesake business district – which includes the former home of John Doolittle’s airline - many businesses were founded here such as First National Bank (1902), Western Union (1915), Eastman Kodak (1920), American Telephone & Telegraph (1928), and Northern Pacific Railroad (1945). The community experienced several periods of prosperity throughout its history including during World War II when production at local factories led to increased demand for goods exported abroad; the post-war years when new housing developments sprang up in response to high levels of joblessness; and more recent years when job opportunities have dwindled following declines in industry. Despite these challenges, despite occasional subdivisions or crossovers with other communities nearby, Watsonville has remained a largely stable community with strong social ties that continue today.
Watsonville was founded by Captain George Goodwin in 1836. The town was named for General James Watson, who commanded the California forces during the Mexican-American War and later served as U.S. Minister to Mexico. The first post office in Watsonville was established in 1838, and it operated under the name of "Giovanni." In 1850, the town became a county seat, and its first jail was built that year. In 1863, an act passed by the state legislature designated Watsonville as the site of what is nowSanta Clara County. By 1870, however, only 2 blocks of Watsonville remained unincorporated because of land grants given out to individual settlers.
