Watsonville is a city in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 17,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula. The City of Watsonville was founded by Captain James Wills and his wife Sarah Ann Wills in 1847. It is located on the east side of Ventura Bay and shares borders with nearby Lompoc to the north and Santa Barbara to the south. The first Europeans to visit what is now Watsonville were Spanish missionaries in 1772. In 1821, an act of Congress designated it as part of Rancho San Vicente de Los Osos y Gordera. By 1860, there were only about 25 residents living in Watsonville. However, over time, the town grew due to its location near the ocean and its access to boat ramps for shipping. By 1920, Watsonville had a post office, school district, and a manufacturing plant belonging to International Harvester Company (IHC). In 1941-1942 during World War II, IHC erected two large wooden barracks which became known as "DOD" (dodecanoylphosphate) Barracks #1 and #2. These barracks are still standing as part of downtown Watsonville's skyline today. In 1957-1958 IHC built a new factory in what is now called Pico Boulevard which employed over 1,000 people at that time. This factory produced automobiles such as Buick LeSabre and Cadillac Eldorado models until it closed in 1991 after being bought by General Motors Corporation The city council first met in 1907 with Wofford Jordon serving as mayor at that time In 1912 when David Laughlin arrived from Redondo Beach he purchased title to 1/3interest in Rancho San Vicente de los Osos from José Ygnacio Ferrer who also owned alluvial land adjacent thereto . Laughlin established himself as one of county’s most powerful developers He leased but did not purchase land from Ferrer until 1915 when he acquired title for $5000 per acre . With this purchase he became sole owner of Rancho San Vicente de los Osos where he developed some 7 miles (11 km) wide beach front tract including present day Watsonville beginning at ? Boulevard then turning inland towards present day US 101 A partial list of accomplishments by David Laughlin during his stewardship include: building several churches; establishing numerous schools; programs providing health care;?? creating roads;???establishing fire services ;? leading local civic organizations into prominence such as becoming president or secretary general of both Ventura County Federation Club Natatorium League[?]and Interurban League[?]

Watsonville was founded in 1868 by George Tilton and named after Dr. James Watson, who discovered oxygen gas while working on a mine in nearby Monterey County. The name change came about because of an issue with another local community which had been called Trinity (later renamed Sausalito). The town's growth continued until after World War II when it became an agricultural center due to its location near various irrigation ditches and other agricultural activities that were important during that time period for Santa Cruz County. Today, much of what made Watsonville so prosperous has been lost due to changes within the local economy over time such as development around Highway 101 which has taken away many of the old landmarks and businesses district including most notably the original Cheese Factory Building still standing today across from downtown along 3rd Street between University Avenue and Fruitvale Avenue just south of BART Station BART) However some remnants including numerous outbuildings still remain throughout much of neighboring Redwood Shores/Montara Heights despite major redevelopment taking place there also
