The first gun target in Watsonville was built in 1875 by F.W. Larkin, a local contractor. The original gun target was a 20-pounder rifle cannonball that could be fired from an elevated position on the wall of the old San Miguel Missionaries Chapel. In 1896, J.E. Smith, a local fisherman and hunter, erected a new 30-pounder rifle cannonball target at the corner of First and Second Streets. This target became known as "The Iron Duke" because it would often hit well above average and remain unbroken for many years. In 1931, Leland Stanford Jr., son of Stanford University founder Leland Stanford Sr., donated $10,000 to help purchase and erect a new 35-inch diameter steel barrel artillery projectile called "The Big Gun" at the corner of Second Street and First Avenue in downtown Watsonville. This projectile featured an 8-foot long barrel with 12 .50 caliber rounds that could be discharged from an elevation of 60 degrees or greater; it became one of the most popular targets in town because it was easy to find and shoot at regardless of weather conditions. In 1934, the City Council authorized use of guns for firing sports contests during their annual meeting on October 17th; this resulted in the erection of two more 30-pounder rifle cannons (the "Towering Titans") on Telegraph Hill across from City Hall to provide even more firepower for these events! After years of use by various city councils over different issues, both guns were eventually sold to private owners in 1957 and were subsequently removed from service in 1969 after becoming highly deteriorated condition.
Watsonville is a small town in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Santa Clara County. The name Watsonville comes from Hiram Watt (1788-1851), an early settler and landowner who named his place after his brother John Watson (1775-1857). Watsonville has been inhabited by Native Americans since before the arrival of Europeans. Spanish missionaries founded Mission San Francisco de Asís (now San Francisco) in 1795 and established cattle herds on the east side of Santa Cruz River. In 1821, American Captain George Gaspar Adams visited Santa Clara Valley and noted that there were no villages or towns within its limits; he called the area "Nuestra Señora de la Concepción". A year later, Isaac Stevens built a cabin near present day Mountain View on part of what is now Menlo Park. By 1825, most of Silicon Valley had been won by Americans in the Mexican–American War. When California became a U.S. state in 1850, Watsonville was one of nine towns chosen to become part of Palo Alto Township; it remained so until 1907 when it merged with El Sobrante Township to form Palo Alto Municipal Corporation under then-Mayor George Hargrave Doleman. In 1906, Ansel Adams took his first photographs of Yosemite National Park while driving through eastern Sonoma County on his way to see Mount Tamalpais at Livermore NP; he named this area Spring Mountains because they looked like snowcapped peaks he’d seen in Yosemite National Park across the valley floor below him. In 1912, Lillie Hitchcock opened her business selling vacuum cleaners; she called it Hitchcock’s Shop & Cleaning Institute because she did all the cleaning herself—a first for America. By 1916, about 60% of all textiles produced in America were made here at home according to The Cotton Board Report which listed 85 textile companies manufacturing 100% domestically grown cotton fabrics during 1914-1920 inclusive; many local familiesoperated these businesses including those around Haystack Rd., now known as North First St.; Today's North First St.—Juried Historic District—represents over three centuries worthof community history including some 200+ buildings dating back to 1797 whenCaptain Arthur Calkins discovered gold near present day Winton Dr.—and also includes two original mission churches built here:Mission Dolores and Mission Coyote—both destroyed by fire following earthquakes measuring 3&4 MG each Fri Sep 10 1870 Castro Peak earthquake followed closely by devastating fires that destroyed both missions Apr 1865 #8 recorded earthquake activity south central US

Watsonville is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Watsonville is named after Francis Samuel Watson, an American naturalist and explorer who explored the San Francisco Bay Area in 1842. It was founded as a result of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. The first permanent settler in what would become Watsonville was John Bidwell in 1859. Bidwell founded Bidwell Station on Hwy 101 near present day Interstate 680. In 1870, Major Richard Wolkentin purchased land east ofpresent-day downtown from George Hearn for $1,000 cash and built a log house which he called "Watson's Cabin". He also established Wolkentin Rancho Santa Rita de la Frontera (now part of unincorporated Orinda). Over time other settlers arrived including James Fenton in 1872, Andrew Jansen in 1878, William Haggerty in 1886 and Charles Dolan in 1907. In 1906, when California became a state, many people left San Francisco for new opportunities in the new state. One such person was Arthur Ashe who decided to move to Watsonville because it had been rebuilt after the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire that destroyed much of downtownSan Francisco. At first there were only a few buildings standing but within two years over one thousand people had moved into Watsonville from all over Northern California The community began to grow rapidly due to its location on the newly developed Highway 101 corridor just south of Palo Alto and north of Menlo Park which made it easy for businesses to locate and drive traffic to their stores or services. The mixture of old Victorian homes with modern storefronts helped give the town an airy feeling that contributed to its growth; this is also likely why it has been nicknamed "TheTownThat Built itself" It wasn't long before some members of the community started developing their own property holdings outside of town limits; these include areas now known as North Austin Preserve or Old West Side Sales Area. This trend continued until 1940 when all non-town lands within city limits were annexed by City Limits
Watsonville was founded in 1853 by George Washington Smith. The townspeople came to the area from nearby San Mateo because of its fertile soil and natural resources. In 1865, the United States Post Office was established in Watsonville, and it remained in operation until 1959. The first store in Watsonville was built on what is now Main Street. In 1875, the first school was opened in Watsonville. The town became a city in 1942, and it has since had several large businesses and cultural institutions.
