There is no one definitive answer to this question, as the history of firearms swivels varies greatly. The refinery quickly became one of the most important economic engines in California and generated thousands of jobs throughout the years. In 1886, due to competition from Standard Oil (now ExxonMobil) and American Signal Company (later Agelco), the Hercules Oil Refining Company replaced Jack London Square as America's largest oil refiner before being merged into Mobil Corporation in 1956. Over time however, Hercules' legacy has been largely overshadowed by that of Mobil Corporation which has become one of Los Angeles' most dominant commercial entities dating back to its establishment as a city in 1912
