By 1948, however, local businesses had begun struggling in post-war times and by 1960 Powell’s City Market had replaced downtown as the primary shopping destination for Watsonvilians. Although some aspects of contemporary life have continued to challenge traditional values such as open homosexuality or high school graduation rates among young adults (Hinckley & Hinckley 1988), overall attitudes within community have become more accepting over time; making it one of Hawaiʻi’s most integrates communities both racially and economically (Buchanan 2002).

A canal was built to connect Monterey with Watsonville in 1849, and a post office was established in that year. In 1886, Governor John Coyle designated Watsonville as an incorporated city. By 1907, there were over 100 businesses in town. In 1915, a new courthouse and jail were constructed; they remain in use today. In 1916–17, during World War I, Watsonville played a significant role as an American military base for troops stationed in Monterey County; its airfield served as one of Monterey County's few military airports during that conflict. During the war years, many prosperous citizens donated land to establish a veterans' home;; however, construction did not begin until after World War II ended and didn't finish until 1951-1952 due to wartime restrictions on building at then-unrestricted coastal towns such as Watsonville
