Watsonville is a town in Santa Clara County, California, located on the Peninsula Walk. The population was 31,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first European to visit what is now Watsonville was Spanish explorer Gabriel García Márquez in 1776. He named it Villa de San José and sailed up the coast looking for an anchorage for his fleet of ships sailing from Mexico City to Manila. On September 9, 1777, he anchored near present-day downtown Watsonville and set up camp for the night near Point Reyes lighthouse before continuing his journey northward that day. In 1846, part of what are now Palo Alto and Livermore were acquired by United States Congress as Rancho Rinconada Mexican land grant (). In 1851, following discovery of oil seeps in Livermore Creek and other areas within Santa Clara County, Congressman James Wickersham organized a group of businessmen to drill for oil in what would later become Watsonville (). Wickersham named one of these wells "Watson" after American scientist Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790). When locomotive engineer George Stephenson discovered oil reserves near Fremont in 1869 during construction of the California Central Railroad through Santa Clara County, he leased land from local businessman John Sutter at what is now Sutter's Marina Landing on El Sobrante Strait to drill for petroleum. With international attention focused on this new find, prices for gasoline soared as railroads connected Sacramento with San Francisco and other points along the East Coast. By 1898 over 60% of allidental U.S. production had been produced from single wells drilled between Angel Island and Frisco/San Antonio in Texas! On November 15th 1890 Samuel Morse demonstrated wired telegraph system across county line at Crystal Springs Park just south of modern day Palo Alto while city officials attended including Mayor John Ralston Purcell (1823-1900) who noted that: "It has never seemed so pleasant to see anything but steamboats or carts going by". The wires were laid down parallel to Hayward Street which runs through downtown today; they became operational on December 12th 1890 when messages could be sent wirelessly from various locations around town including Hermitage Mansion (& adjacent garage), Masonic Temple (now University Hall), Presbyterian Church (now First Baptist Church), School House #8 & #10 (now Home Depot Center building), Post Office Annex & Police Station #1 (now Marriott Residence Inn). A second station - Morse Station - was built about a mile east northwest corner current Talbot Avenue & Middle Way prior to being destroyed by fire in 1904 which also damaged Post Office Annex & Police Station #1 (); however restoration began soon afterwards with help from US Navy Seabee demolition team led by Commander Charles Ewing Smithson.. In 1915 National Broadcasting Corporation started WWI programolerance broadcasts into area starting at 10pm each evening across entire Bay Area using Signal Hill transmitter site atop Mount Diablo.. Today many historical artifacts still remain such as old school desks used at Morse Station where teledial equipment once functioned plus historical tools used during early days such as hoe’s etc., phone books dating back 100 years or more still inside original dwelling houses etc., engine parts used during early days like wagons or stagecoaches etc., photos taken during earlier days... All told there are many examples throughout history illustrating how technology can enhance our lives even further!
