Watsonville is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 25,714 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The city began as an agricultural town and now has a large manufacturing presence with industries such as plastics and aircraft parts among others. Its gun magazine industry has long been significant, with several magazines being founded in the city. One of these magazines is also home to one of the world's largest gun shows, the Gun Show of America (GSA). The first gun magazine in Watsonville was established in 1892 by George Custer and his brother-in-law Gouverneur Morris. The company produced rifles and shotguns for sale to farmers and other citizens within the town limits. In 1903, Wm Henson became the president of Custer & Morris Magazine Company Ltd., which changed its name to Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1907 after Winchester bought out Custer & Morris' share in their firm. At that time, it had a staff of twenty-four people; today it employs over one thousand people across five locations worldwide including one located inside Watsonville City Hall! Winchester Repeating Arms Co.'s first product was a shotgun called "Beowulf". It was designed by American firearms manufacturer Samuel Colt and manufactured by Winchester Ammunition Company under license from Colt until 1907 when Colt decided to produce its own shotguns line using designs developed by John Browning for his new American Rifle company. This led to conflict between Winchester Ammunition Company and American Rifle where Browning gained control over much of Winchesters production while still selling ammunition made specifically for American Rifle products under license from Colt! In 1911, Browning purchased all assets of his old rival American Rifle so that he could continue producing both types of ammunition entirely under his own name! In 1916–1918 World War IWW2 during which rifle production increased significantly due to enterprising patriotism on both sides—the US military adopted many 9mm Luger pistols chambered for .45 ACP instead of 7mm Remington Magnum rounds because they felt that this caliber would be more effective against larger numbers Of anti-tank shells than 7mm Remington Magnum rounds

In 1846, John Brown's group of US rebels attempted to seize the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Withdrawing from the arsenal after only a few shots were fired, Brown and his men were arrested and sent to prison. The following year, in an effort to prevent another such event from happening, Congress passed the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. The amendment states "A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed." It is located on the Monterey Peninsula, about 12 miles (19 km) east of the city of San Francisco and 14 miles (23 km) west of the county seat, Salinas. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in Watsonville were Mission Indians who arrived in 1777 from Alta California. They built a cabin on what is now First Street. In 1824 a group of Americans led by Captain James Atherton founded Mission San José de la Cruz (laterMission Dolores). The mission was abandoned in 1836 due to lack of funds and vandalism by local residents. In 1849 a group of Mormon pioneers came to Watsonville from Utah viamodestly called "the route over the mountains." They named their new settlement Fillmore after General Brigham Young's topographical engineer, Hiram Fillmore. The Mormons began trading with Native Californians and building churches and homes here until they were driven out by Indian attacks in 1850-1851. A post office was established at Watsonville in 1853, and it continued operating until 1888 when it merged with Santa Clara County's main post office. In 1906 ownership passed through several hands before being purchased by Andrew Tilton Meredith who renamed it Watsonville State Normal School District No. 5 which still operates today as part of Southern Pacific University's La Jolla Campus
Watsonville grew up on the edge of a salt flats, and was first populated by Native Americans. The area was part of Rancho San Luis Rey, which was granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1834. The name "Watsonville" is derived from Martin de la Cueva's 1772 description of the site: "Valle de los Atacama, en el que se situan unos saltos fabulosos; donde abunda el agua caldeada y fria." In 1836, George Jones built a mill here and named it after his ancestor John Watson. In 1850, Wm. H. Holmes started a tannery in what is now the intersection of Main and Center Streets. A post office was established at Watsonville in 1856, and it remained in operation until 1907. The first school in Watsonville opened in 1865. It became an independent school district in 1905.
