Watsonville is a town in Santa Cruz County, California, United States. The population was 16,853 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Lorenzo River. The first Europeans to visit Watsonville were Missionarios who arrived in 1795 and founded the Mission Santa Clara de Asis. The mission was destroyed by an earthquake in 1811 and its friars moved to Monterey. In 1836, George C. Bancroft platted what became Watsonville along the San Lorenzo River as part of Rancho Rincon de las Pulgas ranchería de la Bahia del Carmen land grant given to José Fiestas by Governor Manuel Nieto on November 12 of that year. In 1838, John Aiken discovered gold at Los Naranjos (now known as Ayer). By 1840, over 30% of all mining claims in Santa Cruz County had been filed with the county recorder's office; including some for silver and gold twenty-four miles (39 km) northeast of present day Watsonville. A group of British entrepreneurs led by William Murdoch bought Rancho Rincon de las Pulgas from José Fiestas in 1846 and renamed it "Watsonville". They began developing the area into a farming community with vineyards and orchards while also constructing dams on nearby ranches to water their fields. At first they raised sheep but soon switched to cotton production which grew faster than wheat due to higher yields from irrigation systems then being available anywhere else in California. In 1865 local miners struck it rich when they found oil shale under ground near modern-day East Palo Alto; this discovery made them one of America's leading oil producers for many years until it was supplanted by petroleum production during World War II when tankers delivered gasoline directly from wells in Texas rather than using tanker ships
