In 1951, Watsonville was selected as one of five locations for NASA's premier space observatory which would become known as JPL-Caltech Joint Laboratory (JPL). The city has played an important role in both national oversight of technology development at JPL and its home campus since that time with numerous industrial partnerships including those formed with Hewlett-Packard Co., Sun Microsystems Inc., Intel Corp., Google Inc., NVIDIA Corporation, Cisco Systems Inc., Caltrans District 513 and Northrop Grumman Corporation among others. The University of California system purchased land east of downtown in 1957 to create UC Berkeley’s new School of Engineering & Applied Sciences (SEAS), which soon merged into UC Davis’ then- fledgling College of Letters & Science (CLS). In 2003, UCSB announced it would merge with CSU Bakersfield to form UC Riverside; this led to the rebranding of UCSB as "UC Riverside". On November 3rd, 2016 UCR announced that they will be joining UC Irvine starting fall 2017 making UC Riverside once again one institution with multiple campuses across Orange County

The town was first established as a stage stop on the Oregon & California Railroad. In 1865, Watsonville became the seat of Clatsop County after it was created from part of Deschutes County. The population of Watsonville peaked at 10,000 in 1925 and declined to 5,500 by 1950. However, since then it has slowly regained its former significance as a rural community with strong ties to its surroundings. Watsonville began as a small ranching community that sprang up around the base of Mount Hood during the 1850s. By 1860, John B. Watson had purchased some land within present-day Watsonville and began developing it into what is now a small town – consisting primarily of farmers and others engaged in agriculture or related activities such as fishing or mining. At first there were only about 20 people living in what is today known as downtown Watsonville when it first emerged from obscurity during World War II; however, due to wartime growth and later development, downtown gradually grew into one of the most important commercial districts on the Coast Range with several large businesses including Wacoal (later Wacoal USA), JBL Radio Shack, Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E), Western Union Telegraph Company (WUXT), Sears Roebuck & Co., Local 857 United Automobile Makers Association (UAMA) – among others – located thereabouts throughout much of postwar America’s post-war boom period…………………………………………………………….. Although growing commercial activity brought heavy traffic congestion to downtown during peak hours between 1945 and 1960 – which effectively stopped development along Main Street between Seventh and Eighth Streets – by 2000 retail space had increased fivefold along First Street between Fourth and Fifth Avenues while job growth over that time totaled more than 50%, making downtown one of Northern California’s most vibrant business districts…………………………………………………………….. The Watsonville area was part of the Rancho San Francisco Mexican land grant to Juan Bautista Acevedo in 1821. The grant included present-day Watsonville, as well as parts of Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. In 1836, following the Mexican–American War, Mexico ceded all of California to the United States. As a result, the Watsonville area became part of section 10 ofranchos Santa Clara and San Francisco. In 1850, portions of section 10 were split off to form new ranchos: Rancho San Lorenzo (west side), Rancho Rinconada (east side), and Rancho Los Cerritos (north side). In 1872, after three years of construction and two years of occupancy by prospectors led by John Sutter, cattle ranchers from neighboring ranches formed a company named Western Mining Company to drill for gold in what is now eastern Contra Costa County. This led to increased traffic on the road linking these areas and helped spur economic development in this region. By 1906, there were over 1,000 businesses in downtown Watsonville with an annual payroll greater than $1 million. The town prospered until World War II when it lost its importance due to post-war population growth elsewhere in California. However, during the postwar period it regained some prominence as a bedroom community for nearby Berkeley while remaining largely rural until the late 1990s when large commercial developments began moving into its neighborhoods
