Wasco is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,792 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley. The name Wasco comes from the Spanish word "wasco" meaning "whale." The town was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847. In 1853, it became an independent station on the Central Pacific Railroad. The railroad abandonment in 1930 made Wasco an incorporated town. The first post office in Wasco opened in 1848 and was called Indian Camp; it closed in 1865. The first store opened in 1850 and was called Post Office Station No. 2; it closed around 1870. In 1903, a school for boys was built and named after Hiram Johnson (1795-1881), who served as Ulysses S Grant's secretary of state under President James K Polk (1846-1912). A girls' school followed suit two years later. After World War II, the male students at both schools were transferred to nearby Stockton while the female students continued to be taught at their original location until 1948 when they were moved to Menlo Park due to budget cuts by then Governor Ronald Reagan (1911-1989). In 1957, the name change again to Wasco Junior College when it merged with Menlo Park College.. In 1984, a new high school building was completed which replaced an older high school building that had been damaged by fire three years earlier.. In 1990, a new water tower/pump station addition was completed which increased pumping capacity for local water users..
