The name Wasco comes from an old Hupa word meaning "place where there are no trees." At one time, the area was part of the Mexican land grant Rancho Las Flores. In 1851, George Custer and his Seventh Cavalry traveled through Wasco on their way to General Grant's army at Mission Josephine in southern California. They stopped at the ranch home of Jornada del Norte cattleman Manuel de la Torre for dinner on October 26,1851. As a result of this visit, Wasco became known as "the place where General Custer stopped." The town site was surveyed in 1872 by James Fenton and named after him. A post office called Wascoside opened in 1877; it was discontinued in 1907. The first store building was built near current day Main Street in 1903 by Jens Rasmussen & Sons grocery business owners Dvorak and Muller-Rasmussen. Rasmussen died before construction could begin on the second store building which he had helped finance; it was completed in 1912 but saw little use because of World War I shortages of lumber and other materials needed to build new stores.
