Wasco, California is located in the Mojave Desert of southern California. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is a locality in Kern County, California. The name Wasco comes from the Spanish word "wascu", meaning "Washoe" or "Weasel". The community of Wasco was founded on December 8, 1887, by citizens of Bakersfield and other nearby towns who were alarmed by reports that an animal known as the Washoe had been raiding their fields and stealing cattle. A group of men led by John Sutter surveyed the area and discovered a wash where the Washoe could potentially be retreating after claims that they had killed one of them. They named the stream for General James H. Kearny who had defeated Mexican forces at Buena Vista Creek on October 16, 1846. In 1910, local farmers met to discuss whether they should build a town or another irrigation canal to improve their crops and water supply. After much debate, it was decided to build a town because there would be more people in Wasco to support it and because it would provide social opportunities for residents. On November 14, 1910, the first post office opened in Wasco with Wm Hays as its first residentpostmaster The town began expanding rapidly with new homes being built throughout 1911-1912; when Highway 395 was completed through central Kern County in 1932-1933 traffic increased so much that two school districts were created: one near downtown Wasco and one west of it; both schools became fullighthouses during World War II as part of Project El Toro (the Army's program to arm coastal communities against Japanese raiders). The post office closed in 1951 but mail continued to be delivered via horseback into downtown until 1971 when all deliveries were made electronically through mail boxes According to 2000 census data available from Ancestry., 72% of residents are Hispanic or Latino . In 2006 Census Bureau data available through Google Earth , 60% of residents are employed within commuting distance either within self or neighboring cities/towns

Wasco is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The name Wasco comes from Wasconee and means " arise from the ashes ". The townsite was founded in 1876 by two brothers named A.W. and J.D. Wasco as a place to burnt down brush that had been encroaching on their cattle range northeast of Bakersfield. The first post office opened in 1877 and the town took its present name in 1915 after American entrepreneur George Wasconee donated $5,000 to help build a school and stores in Wasco. The loss of this donation left the town with no money to finance municipal services such as water or road maintenance, so successive mayors have relied increasingly on property tax revenues generated by businesses within the limits of Wasco to maintain essential infrastructure functions such as schools and fire Department while also providing other benefits such as recreation opportunities for residents nearby like swimming, fishing and boating
Washoe County was founded in 1859, and Wasco is the oldest town in the county. The first post office was established in Wasco in 1860, and the first store was built in 1865. In 1868, a school was started in Wasco, and the first doctor to serve Washoe County was Dr. George Ransom. In 1870, a stage line arrived at Wasco from Nevada and began service there; this service ended when the line crossed the Nevada state line. The population of Washoe County grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to development of irrigation systems and ranching. By 1912, there were over hundred residents living in Wasco alone. During World War I, local production of munitions led to rising prices for goods sold within Washoco; as a result, many people left town for work on farms or elsewhere during that time period. After World War I ended, growth slowed while people returned to their homes; by 1930, only 10 residents lived inWasco.[3] The 1950s saw significant growth as an agricultural center due to increased demand for water rights and other land ownership opportunities following reorganizations of American agriculture that occurred during that decade. In 1960,Wasco became home to his alma mater – Stanford University – after its relocation from Palo Alto California
