Wasco is a city in Kern County, California. The population was 16,859 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1876 by miners who came to the area from Nevada and Oregon. It became a consolidated city with nearby Bakersfield on December 1, 1955. Wasco is located in the central part of Kern County at an elevation of 4,745 feet (1,467 m). The mining industry left Wasco with a high rate of poverty and Unemployment during the early years followed by growth as new industries developed such as agriculture and construction. In recent decades there has been a strong effort to revitalize the downtown business district which now includes many restaurants, bars and retail stores including several large supermarketsanchored by Walmart Supercenter and Costco.

However, the mill site still remains as a popular tourist destination today. The first settlers of Wasco were farmers who arrived from Northern California during the Gold Rush period. They erected cabins on what is now East Main Street and began trading goods with other towns along the route of the Central Pacific Railroad. By 1830, there were more than 20 people living in Wasco. By 1850, there were over 100 residents and two churches had been built. In 1881, George WashingtonWasco opened a flour mill which produced wheat flour for local consumption and export to nearby cities such as San Francisco and Sacramento. The mill continued to operate until it was shut down due to lack of competition in 1928. However, part of the mill complex still stands today as a popular tourist attraction called Old Mill Site Park with views of Alamo Hills (to the west).
Wasco was founded in 1861 by John Wasco and his brother, Salmon. The brothers were farmers who grew corn, wheat, and cotton. In 1882, the Wasco family donated land to the city of San Francisco for a streetcar line. The city built the first streetcar line in California.
