Wasco, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east bank of the Kern River and is bordered by Bakersfield to the south and Eastgate to the north. The first settlement in Wasco was made in 1876 when Gideon Waddell erected a cabin on what is now public land near where US Route 66 crosses the Kern River. The early inhabitants were farmers and their families who gathered around water sources for drinking and cooking. A post office was established at Wasco in 1879 and remained in operation until 1923. In 1886, John Hargrave built a sawmill on his farm west of town which became one of Wasco's primary economic engines during its early years. By 1901, however, Hargrave had sold all his land within town limits to form part of the new city of Bakersfield. In 1915, as part of an effort to attract more businesses to Bakersfield, Mayor Sprague called for a zoning change that would allow small towns like Wasco to remain independent while still sharing some common amenities with their larger neighbor-towns such as shopping malls and schools. The measure passed with only minor modifications and was ratified by voters later that year. During World War II, many residents worked at government facilities located outside of town; however, most residences were destroyed or greatly damaged during hostilities which left many people homeless and without homes or property rights. After 1945 much rebuilding took place as poverty stricken citizens reclaimed their old homes; however initial progress stalled due to lack of funding from state coffers following the war’s end. In 1958 an act entitled "An Act To Regulate Commerce And Industry Of The City Of BakersFIELD" was passed by then Mayor James Jaffe; this legislation created what would become known as “the downtown business zone” which limited development within one block radius of any existing commercial establishment situated within 500 feet (150 m)of any public building or park used for recreation or educational purposes- effectively killing off any hopes for additional retail development in what had been once dubbed “the ghost town” since no new businesses could be founded without prior approval from city hall In 1970 Alice Cook moved into her current home after years spent living outdoors; she has stated that moving into her current home saved her over $10K worth of repairs necessary due to damage caused by previous tenants Today Wasco enjoys resumed growth rates thanks largely to several initiatives spearheaded by its elected officials led collectively through Downtown Business Improvement District (DBID). The city had a population of approximately 100 people when it merged with Selma to form Selma-Wascosuiex-Wasco.
