The first shots fired in what is now Wasco were from rifles used by the Mexican Battalion during the 1846-48 war with Mexico. The Battalion was made up of American soldiers who had been stationed on the Mexican side of the border. As time passed, more and more guns were developed for use by both sides in wars. One such gun was a rifle called the "Bouquet" which was first used in 1853. The Bouquet was designed to fire shot weighing between 2 and 4 pounds each. It could be fired at a distance of up to 100 yards. In 1865, Captain John Cushing organized an army unit known as Company A which consisted of men from Sonoma County and Fresno County. This unit was designated as Company A1 which participated in General Ulysses S Grant’s Sherman’s march through California in late 1866-early 1870. With Companies A2, A3, and A4, Captain Cushing’s Unit participated in many battles throughout California during that time period including Battle of Bear Valley (1868), Alamo Raid (1869), Mojave Desert Campaign (1870), Yuma War (1871), Stockton Rebellion (1872) and Merced Rebellion (1873). In 1875, Captain Cushing retired from his military career after over 20 years service and moved to Redding where he continued to live until his death on January 5, 1896 at age 82 years old. He is buried at Redding Cemetery next to General United States Grant and other leading Californians during that time period including Governor Pio Pico
Wasco, California is located in the Western United States. The area has been inhabited by various Native American groups for over 10,000 years. The first European to visit Wasco was Captain John McLoughlin in 1820. He named the area after his friend and business partner, George Wasco. The name "Wascal" was also given to a small creek that flows through the town. In 1872, a post office was established at Wasco and it remained in operation until 1907. During that time, the town had a population of just under 100 people. In 1916, when Mandatory military service ended in America, many of the men of Wasco returned to their homes and businesses. Many of these men started a cooperative farm which still operates today- WASCO FARM COOPERATIVE LTD.. In 1951, Wasco became an incorporated city with a population of around 200 people. It grew rapidly during this time and by 1970 had reached its current size with 2,500 residents. In 1976, WASCO won the prestigious Gold Medal from the United States Government for its commitment to Sustainable Agriculture program- which later lead to them becoming one of only 4 U.S cities to win this distinction nationwide Today, WASCO is known as an important agricultural community due to their extensive production of hay and straw products as well as other agricultural outputs such as fruits and vegetables The town also contains several shopping malls including One Stop Shoppingcenter & Supercenter (opened in 1978), Redding Mall (opened in 1987), Southern California Plaza (opened in 1990), and Northern California Plaza (opened in 1996). These shopping centers provide local retailers with much needed space within close proximity to consumers

In 1848, when gold was discovered at Siskiyou and placer mining began, some prospectors found wild oats near present-day Wasco. The first post office in Wasco was established in 1859. By 1870, there were over twenty businesses in the community. Mining ceased around 1890 due to low grades of gold and silver ore. Today, there are a few small businesses and homebuilders in Wasco.
Wasco County was established in 1852, and named after the Wasco River. The county seat was at Colusa. In 1876, it became part of Nevada County. In 1916, it became part of California County.
