The industry continued to grow until It peaked at 1 million metric tons in 1964 before slowly declining due to numerous factors including environmental concerns and increasing consumer awareness of pollution created by manufacturing activities. Wasco is a small town in California, located about an hour south of San Francisco on I-580. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. Wasco is considered to be a bedroom community for the city of San Francisco. The area now known as Wasco was first settled by prospectors and miners in the 1850s. By 1870, the town had a post office, grocery store and school. In 1879, John Cushing built the first mill in Wasco and became its first president. The town grew rapidly after it became part of Northern California during the Gold Rush of 1849-1851. By 1860, there were 100 businesses in Wasco with a population of 1,500 people. In 1865, local merchant George Wickersham established what would become Wicker's General Store as one of several stores along Main Street in Dido Valley that sold goods from wagonloads brought downriver by riverboats called "Wicker's Wagons." In 1868 (the same year that gold was discovered at Sutterville), Wickersham organized what would becomeknown as The Daring Doomed Mines company which leased land east of Sacramento to found new mines including some near present day Wasco. In 1870 he also founded J P Richardson who operated many hotels and restaurants along Main Street throughout much of California’sCentral Coast but especially around Stockton where Richardson eventually built his largest hotel still standing today - The Stockton Clubhouse

Wasco is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,865 at the 2010 census. Wasco is located on the north bank of the Kern River, about 18 miles northwest of Bakersfield. It takes its name from Wacom who founded it in 1865. The first post office in Wasco was established in 1875. The community developed around a small sawmill and grist mill which were operated by James A. Chaffee and his son Hiram Chaffee until 1907. In 1918, local farmers organized the Wasco-Bakersfield Grain Elevator to ship grains from Wasco to Bakersfield and other nearby cities. The Chaffee family continued to operate their mill until 1951 when it was sold to Swen Hesselius and his sons Harry and Carlisle Hesselius. They built a new mill which entered production in 1953. The mill produced flour, cornmeal, paper products, oilseed rape seed, beef cattle feed and other agricultural products until it ceased operations in 1984. The old mill complex still stands today as a museum which contains exhibits on early pioneer life including an exhibit on Wacom tablet technology used by Native Americans at the time of WASCO's founding

In 1898, the U.S. Postal Service relocated to Wasco from Salinas and appointed George A. Smith as the first Postmaster General of the United States. John Wasco was born at Coyote Wells in San Joaquin County on October 10, 1819, and died there on July 10, 1893. He was an American entrepreneur who started several companies that were important during the early days of California's history. One such company wasWasco Mining and Manufacturing Company which manufactured goods used by miners throughout California including flour, bacon, oil lamps, saddles and horseshoes; it also exported goods to other parts of the United States.
