The population of Mexicali County peaked at over 20,000 people in 1928 and then declined to over 10,000 by 1940. However, due to its proximity to Los Angeles and its status as a bedroom community for Mexico City residents, Mexicali experienced rapid growth during the post-World War II period. As a result of this growth, local businesses began to mushroom and social services were offered to help improve economic conditions for residents. By 1970,Mexicali had become one of Southern California's most populous cities with a population exceeding 25,[1] but during the late 1980s and early 1990s there has been significant effort to reduce its size as a result of increased competition from other Metropolitan Areas throughout Southern California.[2]
