Walnut, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It is located about an hour's drive from Fresno and Sacramento. The population was 5,872 at the 2000 census. In 1892, Charles Goodyear started working for his father in a tannery in Walnut. Goodyear moved to Walnut in 1903 and opened his own tannery which became one of the largest tanneries in the state. The Goodyears were also owners of the nearby Ponderosa Rancho Santa Fe. In 1916, they sold their tannery to George Eastman Company who renamed it "Goodyear's". In 1938, Goodyear's merged with other companies to become RJR Nabisco Corporation which continued to operate as Goodyear's until 1984 when it was acquired by Pepsi-Cola. The first gun case company in Walnut was James Wittenborn & Sons which made cases for rifles and shotguns under the name "Wittenborn Rifle Cases", later changed to "Hutchinson Camera Cases" and finally later still as "Goodyear Camera Cases". In 1897 Wittenborn partnered up with John J. Hutchinson who founded Hutchinsons Camera Workshops (now part of Panasonic) on Felton Street near Pershing Avenue where he produced high quality camera cases for both indoor and outdoor photography using film stocks imported from Europe. His products soon became well known throughout Northern California and were much sought after by photographers throughout America including Edward Munch (1863-1948), Edwin Land (1893-1965), Alfred Eisenstaedt (1889-1976) and many others whose work can be seen at various museums around the country such as The Museum of Modern Art in New York City or The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History in Washington D.C.. From 1933 through 1967, James Wittenborn produced rifle cases exclusively for Colt firearms called “Colt Gun Rounds” This product line helped contribute significantly to Colt Firearms becoming one of America’s leading firearms manufacturers during this period; output peaked at over 1 million rounds per year between 1953 and 1957!
