By 1870, rifle shots were being fired from long-range into town square during fairs and other public events. The use of rifles for hunting increased in popularity in the late 1800s as well, so hunters started using shotguns instead of rifles for hunting game animals. Shotgunners began wearing safety goggles (sunglasses) to protect their eyes from pellets shot by shotguns while hunting birds or deer. After about 1910 when sunglasses became standard issue for police officers, most law enforcement personnel began using some form of eye protection while performing their duties

Walnut is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. Walnut is located on the eastern edge of Kern County and west of Bakersfield. The first permanent settler in what would become Walnut was George Rogers Clark who arrived in 1848. He named his land "Walnut" after a nut tree he had seen growing near his home in Virginia. In 1853, the walnut industry got its start when J.C. Nichols started cultivating walnuts on his farm south of town. By 1865,walnut production had reached an all-time high with over 60 barns full of nuts being exported to various parts of the world each year. In 1872, John Sutter founded Sutter's Land Company which began buying land for farming and built a sawmill at present day Walmart Drive and Third Street in 1886 using lumber from Douglas fir trees that were being grown by local farmers east of town on parcels purchased from Samuel Winchester between 1851 and 1865 inclusive (now part of Walnut). At this time there were only about 10 families living in town and most citizens worked outside the village limits providing essential services such as water supply and schoolhouse construction for those within walking distance including many farms that are still standing today like Wallace's Mill along Third Street or Butcher's Mill just off Walmart Boulevard today (). An important development that took place during this early era was the opening of the so-called First Transcontinental Railroad through Kern County by General James Halleck on November 15th, 1869 which connected Bakersfield with Los Angeles via Stockton (then called Porterville) across Valley Creek valley thus creating an economic backbone for what would become known as Walnut Valley throughout much of southern California (). A post office called "Walnut" was established in 1870 but it never grew very large due to lack of interest or competition from other towns closer to major railroads like Bakersfield which had been receiving mail 7 miles away since 1850 (). Eventually both offices were closed down because they could not keep up with increased railroad traffic caused by new discoveries across Southern California such as oil wells etc.. In 1893 ,the last postmaster general decided to close down all post offices statewide because he felt postal service was no longer necessary due to technological advances which made delivery more efficient than ever before (). However one building did remain open until 1931 - The historic Main Post Office building now known as Riverview Hall inside Walmart Shopping Center
