Walnut, California is a small town in Kern County, California. Walnut Creek Canyon lies just outside of the town limits. The town was founded by Mormons in 1858 and named for Walnut tree (Juglans regia). The first rifle scopes were made here in 1876. A mill was built in 1865 to process lumber from the nearby mountain forests. In 1908, Walnut Creek Canyon was annexed by the town of Fernley. Today, there are few if any businesses left within the boundaries of Walnut Creek Canyon and it has been declared a local park by the city of Bakersfield. This discovery led to further development around Walnut with the establishment of a mill village including a store, bakery, hotel and dance hall; also seen were new housing developments such as the Diamond Lakes Resort & Casino on Big Piney Creek adjacent to Interstate 15 and Residential Acres Park located just east ofCurrent Day Walnut on State Route 395/Upper Big Piney Creek Road which has both open space and agricultural land within its boundaries
