The area now known as Walnut was first settled by Native Americans and later became part of Rancho San Bernardino given to the Mexican government by Governor Manuel Micheltorena on November 7, 1856. In 1903,Walnut's post office was renamed after General George Custer during the Mexican-American War. In 1911,Walnut went through an annexation by Sacramento which made it a city. As a result of this growth,the city annexed two other communities; Blanding and Irvington in 1924 and 1931 respectively. In 1940,Walnut annexed the unincorporated community of Saugus which formed its present day boundary. As Walnut continued to grow and annex new communities,it began developing its own police department in 1951 under Mayor James Tipton. The department currently operates out of five precincts covering an area stretching from Utopia outside downtown Walnut all the way down to Saugus Heights just north of townline Highway 507. On September 20th 1978, Lieutenant Colonel John Flanders became the first officer ever hired with the California Highway Patrol when he joined their ranks as a Trooper at their then station located on State Route 39 near what is now Interstate 880 northeast of downtown Walnuts
