Walnut, California was founded on October 17, 1869, by John C. Fremont and his brother-in-law Charles W. Woolley. The townsite was named for the walnut trees that thrived in the area. In 1870, Fremont built a sawmill and gristmill in Walnut Creek Valley. The mill produced flour and other goods until it closed in 1934. Today, the Walnut Creek Mills State Historic Park is located within the town of Walnut Creek.
