The original settlement at Walnut Grove was built around 1800 on land grant from Spain to James Montgomery, one of America's earliest fur traders and landowner who also served as justice of the peace for Contra Costa County during its early days. It lay within what is now Old Santa Clara County, south of Martinez and east of Palo Alto on Arenal Peak Range foothills overlooking San Francisco Bay Area cities including Oakland, Emeryville and Berkeley; today it is located within present-day Fremont City limits adjacent to Menlo Park
Walnut is located in the Central Valley of California and was first settled by Native Americans. The town was founded in 1851, and quickly became a center for agriculture. In 1915, Walnut became the capital of California. It remained that way until 1959, when it moved to Sacramento.
