Walnut, California is a small city in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 5,591 at the 2010 census. Walnut is located on the eastern edge of Stockton and is bordered by Livermore to the east, Modesto to the north, and Ceres to the west. The downtown area has been built around Centennial Park since 1908. The first recorded mention of walnuts in this area comes from a document from 1776 that mentions Mission San Francisco de Asís being founded near what is now Walnut Creek. At that time walnuts were considered a valuable commodity and were grown for their oil and starch kernels. By 1800 walnuts had become an important part of California society due to their high quality; they had become such an important crop that Governor Manuel Nieto granted them exempt status from state taxation in 1825. In 1853 President Franklin Pierce ordered all products other than cotton be taxed at 25% rather than the then-current 20%. This event helped spur economic development in Walnut Creek and surrounding towns including Walnutville which became established as a center for processing walnuts into nuts, flour, etc., while also becoming known as "the Nut Mill of America". In 1906 Congress authorized construction of the Central Pacific Railroad which linkified Stockton with Reno Nevada and linked Asia with North America via Sacramento City. One result of this railroad activity was increased trade between Northern California counties and those along its route including Stockton where large numbers of new jobs were created in such activities as shipbuilding, lumbering, packing plants (especially peanut butter), dairy production (and later cheese), printing presses (beginning with Calixte Press Company) and many others during World War I when huge quantities of munitions were produced throughout Northern California. After World War II many factories closed down but new ones sprang up like Rheem General Electric Company who manufactured water towers before moving downstream into steam turbines which continue today as GE Power Manufacturing products lineages). Walnut, California is a small city located in the Mono County seat of Mono City, about 15 miles east of the larger town of Salinas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 2,816. It was founded in 1847 by John W. Walnut and named for his father-in-law, Augustus Chapman walnut who also settled in that area. The first sawmill and gristmill were built here in 1848 by Elisha Sutter and Jeptha Bemis; they operated until 1853 when they were replaced by a newer mill which continued to be operational until 1907. The mill also produced flour for local commerce and sold nuts to surrounding farmers. In 1897 Elihu Root purchased the mill from Bemis' heirs; it continued to be run as an agricultural enterprise until 1919 when it became part of the United States Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Experiment Station (USDA). From 1925 through 1957 it served as one of USDA's Regional Offices for Southern California (ROC), responsible for oversaw all aspects of agriculture within that region. In 1957 it became part of the newly created Departmentof Food and Agriculture under then Secretaryof Agriculture James Weaver . After being vacant for many years it reverted back to USDA control on 1 July 2015 In 1865 John Withers erected a large adobe house at what is now Walnut Boulevard just outside town limits; he had come across this site while exploring nearby Dry Creek Valley which he believed could provide water supplies needed to support extensive agricultural operations near Salinas. He offered land along his creek bed for use as rancho or farmland; this portion eventually came into ownership by George Hearst who began developing much of southern California during this time including Walnut Grove, Hearst Ranchos (now known as Desert Hot Springs) and other properties nearby. Hearst commissioned architect Arthur Weitzel to design a large country estate called "Walnut" which would span several blocks inside town limits - today's Walnut Boulevard running north/south - with extensive gardens, damsels in distress and yes,walnuts! The home was completed in 1905 and remains one of central CA's most impressive assets - although sadly never used since Hearsts death in 1938 due to health problems..
Walnut is located in the San Joaquin Valley, about 60 miles east of Fresno. The tree was first grown in this region and its nuts were used to make bread and cheese. In 1853, a Walnut orchard was established near Stockton by J. D. Whitney and others.
