Walnut is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 23,811 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in San Joaquin County after Fresno and the sixth largest city east of the Sierra Nevada. Walnut became an incorporated town on November 3, 1907. The name "Walnut" derives from the Coast Miwok word wan-tut (walnut tree), which may refer to either the fresh fruit or nuts that are found on site or to local appellation Walnuts for their size and sweetness. The firstuts were gathered by Mission Indians about 1795 and early settlers named them Yuma and Huntington because they guarded a route overland between Stockton and Bakersfield. In 1881, Ayer bought 5 acres of land near what is now Walnut Creek and began to grow walnuts. By 1903 he had developed more than 10 acres of land with 25 trees yielding 100 bushels of nuts per acre; his son George operated a packing house on these holdings until his death in 1922. In 1907, when Walnut was incorporated as a town, its post office was called Walford; it changed to Walnut on November 3 that year. The location has been variously spelled Walnut Heights (1892), Waneta (1907), Wanita (1908), Walton (1910) and Wenatchee Heights (1912). The present spelling is based upon the first letter of each proprietor's last name: George for cattleman George Ayer, John for lumberman John Waneta, Melvin for meatpacker Melvin Walton, Alice for teachers Alice Walton etc.. In 1916 an Olive Oil cannery opened at 16th Street & Manchester Avenue in what would become downtown Walnut; it closed in 1951 but left evidence of its presence including two gun turrets still standing behind large brick walls today at 16th Street & Manchester Avenue – one facing northeast towards downtown Walnut streetlights while the other faces southwest towards Morehouse College across Manchester Avenue where later Olive Oil processing operations took place before being demolished in 1987 as part of redevelopment plans for downtown section Alameda Drive/Manchester Avenue area

Walnut, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The first Walnut settler was George Hargrave in 1876. A post office called Walnut was established in 1881, and remained in operation until 1918. The name comes from a walnut tree that grew near the original settlement. In 1902, a sawmill was built in Walnut by J.M. Weyerhaeuser and Brothers . In 1905, an agricultural society was formed to improve agriculture in Kern County. The society purchased land east of Walnut and developed it into what became known as the Walnut Valley Agricultural Experiment Station (WVAS). In 1923, WVAS moved to its present location on FM 527 about three miles northeast of Walnuts center. At that time it served as one of four national laboratories for agronomy research conducted by USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS). The laboratory continues to operate today as UC Davis’ Department of Plant Sciences’ Arsenicum Laboratory. Walnuts history can be traced back to 1876 when Gouverneur Kapp bought 640 acres (248 ha) south of Bakersfield with plans to build a rancho or cow pastureland for his horse and buggy rancho Kapp Rancho de las Pulgas y San Joaquin Valley (KAPR), which straddled parts of present-day Kern and Fresno Counties east of Bakersfield but included most of what is now eastern Kern County including present-day Walnuts community which started out as an adobe home near modern day Hearst Ranch Road 202 on the west side of town square before moving several blocks north along Hearst Boulevard where they currently own their old farm house still standing today
