Walnut is a small city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 8,117 at the 2010 census. Walnut is located on the eastern edge of Livermore Valley and overlooks the San Ramon Valley. It is home to the state's largest walnut orchard, which produces over 130 types of walnuts. The first Europeans to encounter walnuts were Spanish traders in 1769 who noted that they grew plentifully on some of the hills near Martinez. In 1868, J.D. Smith discovered walnuts growing wild in central California and brought them back to Walnut for commercial exploitation in 1874. By 1906,walnuts had become an important part of Contra Costa County culture as a source of income for farmers and ranchers and became a major provider of employment for families throughout the county. In 1928, Walnut became an incorporated town with a population of just over 6 hundred people; however, it would not achieve its current level of development until after World War II when advances in transportation made it easier for people to commute into town from all around the county. During World War II, Walnut was one of eleven towns within Contra Costa County that participated in "Wee Willie's Victory Parade" which celebrated Allied victory over Axis forces at Guadalcanal on December 7th 1941; this parade featured military vehicles such as tanks and artillery pieces transported down Center Street by local Boy Scouts troop leader Wee Willie Weems
