Today, few residents remain in Walnut Grove and most of its buildings have been replaced by newer ones. The original walnuts that were grown here were also very popular and are still available today from some of the local farmers.
The history of Walnut, California dates back to 1879. The first post office in the community was opened in that year. By 1880, there were six businesses in the town and nine residents. In 1886, a school was built and by 1901, there were twelve schools in Walnut. In 1915, Walnut had a population of ninety-six people and by 1920 it had increased to one hundred thirty-five people. That same year, the first grocery store was opened in the town. In 1928, a library was built and by 1933 it had grown to four branches. In 1945, an airfield was built at Walnut and by 1949 it had become an airport. During World War II, walnuts were used as food for troops on deployment around the world. In 1951, walnuts became an official city product and by 1970 they totaled sixty-one businesses with a population of two thousand five hundred fifty-eight people. On May 3rd of that year, Walnut celebrated its centennial with a parade through downtown streets full of local dignitaries including Mayor Artie Goldenberg and City Councilman Harry Sussinger Jr..
