Walnut is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 24,898 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in the East Bay Regional District and the most populous city in Northern California. Walnut was founded by George C. Smith in 1868 and became a incorporated town in 1870. In 1916, Walnut joined the City of San Francisco as one of its original five cities. As of 2017, Walnut had a population of over 50,000 residents and is home to several major businesses including Kaiser Permanente Medical Center and Levi Strauss & Co.. In 1868, George C. Smith set out from his farmstead on what is now part of Oakland to found what would become Walnut Grove Township on land he had purchased from José Castro for $1 per acre (the first time that property changed hands). On December 12th of that year, Walnut Grove Township was ratified by vote with three-to-one support from both Smith and fellow township founders John Sweeny and James Hickey – all men who had also come to purchase land around what would be their new hometown. The township's first courthouse may have been erected soon after its ratification; it appears on map dated January 1st 1870 but no record exists to confirm this claim ( Possibly because it's not mentioned anywhere else ). Although initially little more than an agricultural hamlet numbering just 10 residents in 1870 (and composed almost entirely of Russian émigrés), Walnut quickly began to grow due to its location at the junction points where two important trade routes crossed: The Santa Cruz Railroad ran through town eastbound on Highway 101 southbound; then there was the Central Pacific Railroad running north/south through central Contra Costa County which led directly into San Francisco Bayou Noël further downriver...these transportation arteries made possible increased commerce throughout eastern Contra Costa County as well as Northern California’s largest metropolitan area” . By 1915 when San Francisco annexed much of southern Alameda County - including parts of what would later become Berkeley - walnuts were being cultivated primarily for their fruit rather than their nutting potential so incorporation wasn't necessary anymore but continued until 1916 when San Francisco officially incorporated walnuts into its municipal government along with other similar settlements within city limits like Richmond or Yerba Buena Park
Walnut, California was founded in 1868 as a small community on the San Joaquin River about 25 miles east of Sacramento. The town was named for the walnuts that were grown there. By 1870, Walnut had a post office and an agricultural society. In 1875, the town became part of the newly formed Sacramento County. In 1906, Walnut had a population of 385 people and a school district. The town declined in popularity after World War II and lost its vitality until it regained some importance in the 1990s as a bedroom community for Sacramento.
