Walnut Creek is a small town located in the East Bay Municipal District of San Francisco, California. The name Walnut Creek was derived from the natural abundance of walnuts in the area. As early as 1853, there were tin mines and charcoal burning operations in the town. In 1865, a post office was established in Walnut Creek with John Wirt as its first mail carrier. By 1870, there were over 100 businesses operating in Walnut Creek. Walnut Creek experienced significant growth during World War II due to its strategic location between San Francisco and Oakland. The town became an important manufacturing center for munitions and other war-related products. After the war ended, Walnut Creek lost some of its economic prosperity but has since regained some of its former glory as a manufacturing city. Today, Walnut Creek is home to a number of cultural attractions including The Episcopal Church of the Annunciation which was built in 1868 and is one of only two churches that remain standing from that era; The Fine Arts Museum; Knoppers Aircraft & Marine Supply Company; and many more small businesses and organizations.

Walnut Creek is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 11,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Richmond metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Walnut Creek were Native Americans who hunted and gathered nuts from the oak trees that grew near their village site. In 1876, John Sutter arrived in Search of New Gold and founded the Sutter's Land Company in what is now Walnut Creek. With its fertile soil and access to water supplies, Walnut Creek became an agricultural center during the early years of this century. In 1906, following enactment of San Francisco's zoning laws by Mayor George Fenton, Walnut Creek joined Richmond as a city Limits community within Richmond Heights District No. 1 (later known as Mid-City). This decision removed much of the rural character that had been characteristic of many parts of Contra Costa County for over 100 years prior to incorporation into cities or townships pursuant to state authority under Article XIII Section 3 (compelled subdivision by public convenience and necessity). The city limits contained all but one block of what are now downtown Walnut Creek; most blocks including those north of I-580 were annexed by other municipalities in later decades. The erection of large commercial buildings along Interstate 580 led to increased residential development around these streets; Studebaker Avenue became one major thoroughfare through which residents drove their autos between workaday tasks and weekend pleasure trips on various types of buses or trains departing from MacArthur Terminal on Alameda Street just south of Interstate 680. streetcar service ended at MacArthur Terminal circa 1930 but streetcar tracks still run down College Drive near campus until they were replaced by freeway ramps in 1984 when US 280 took over that route south from I-580 / Highway 592 eastward into downtown Oakland

Walnut Creek is located on the east bank of the San Joaquin River and it is bordered by Orinda to the north, Richmond to the east, Hercules to the south and Millbrae to the west. According to2010 census figures, Walnut Creek has a total area of 18 square miles (46 km²). The first Europeans to visit Walnut Creek were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and Marcos de Niza in 1542. The name "Walnut" likely originated from an acorn that grew there. In 1795, José Gabriel Montoya y Neve had cattle sent downriver from Stockton for sale at Tomales Bay. Montoya's men discovered walnuts growing on a bluff above Tomales Bay and named the place "Monterey". At that time there was no road between Sacramento and San Francisco so goods transported through Walnut creek must have been very important. In 1847, John Montgomery started trading with Mission Santa Clara near modern-day Hayward via wagon trail over land given him by General Mariano Vallejo during his expedition across Northern California. When Mexican forces discovered this trade route in 1848 they burned all of Montgomery's stores as he tried cross country travel without food or water supplies. Walnut Creek is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 59,824 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth largest city in California. Walnut Creek was founded by John C. Walnut in 1845 as a small military post on the side of a hill near the present-day town of Walnut Creek. The name derives from the two major east-west streets that cross it: Walnut and Orchard Streets. The first industry to come to Walnut Creek was agriculture; early farmers grew acacia and other trees for wood, hay, and turnips. In 1881, when American Railways reached nearby Hercules with its new line running between San Francisco and Oakland, walnuts were shipped to Southern California for railway stock. By 1923, walnuts had become an important part of Hercules' economy; by then they accounted for over 50% of all exports from that town. When US Steel became interested in building a steel plant in Shasta County (near Sacramento), it bought land around Hercules for that purpose; Shasta County officials feared that Coalinga would become tooimportant an industrial center if steel production left Shasta County behind. In 1950Walnut Creek voters passed a resolution urging Mayor James Kappler to establish public transportation within the city limits instead of relying on buses or MARTA services provided by Contra Costa Transit District #1 (now known as Bay Area Rapid Transit). This led to the establishment of BART which operated out of downtown until 1997 when it moved into new facilities adjacent to Memorial Park acrossbay from Interstate 680/State Route 488
