Walnut Creek is a small town in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 25,362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Walnut Creek and Pleasanton. The first settlers in what is now Walnut Creek were Native Americans who had been living there for centuries before that. The first permanent settler was James Irvine, who built a cabin in 1826. By 1840, there were several families living in Walnut Creek. In 1849, John Sutter founded the Sutter Mill and Blue Jay Ranch near present-day Pleasanton. This helped to spur development in Walnut Creek as well as adjacent townships and villages around it. In 1860, two brothers named William and George Hardin bought land in what is now Walnut Creek from the Spanish government for $2 an acre (0.8 hectares). They began to build a gristmill on their property which became known as the "Hardin Mill". This mill greatly increased production of flour for local markets and made walnuts available for sale outside of San Francisco Bay Area society. By 1865, Hardin had also built a home called Oak Grove on his mill property which served as a summer residence for his wife and family. In 1876, Jeptha Stephens purchased 1/4 mile (0 kilometer) east of present-day Walton Street from David Horsfolds to establish what would becomeWalnut Creek's first post office - operated by mail service until 1898 when it became part of Contra Costa County within the newly created county seat of Walnut creek
