Walnut Creek is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 26,824 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Contra Costa County by population and the third-largest city in Northern California. Walnut Creek is a small city located in Contra Costa County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 394. It is the smallest city in Contra Costa County and the second-smallest city in California after San Francisco. The name Walnut Creek comes from the local Napa Valley redwood trees that provide most of its economic development. The area around Walnut Creek was first inhabited by Native Americans, who built villages near what is now downtown Walnut Creek. In 1839, Jedediah Smith discovered and named a valley between Mount Diablo and Millbrae as Walnut Creek after his family's walnuts, which he had found growing on Mt. Diablo. After years of exploration and mapping by other explorers, including John Cranch in 1851,Walnut Creek became an incorporated town on February 14th of that year with fifty-six citizens. The early economy of Walnut Creek was based on agriculture; early settlers raised livestock and grew crops such as wheat, barley, peas, cottonseed oil and appleseed oil. However, due to competition from farming towns such as Pleasanton and Concordia (now Danville),Walnut Creek began to develop a industrial base during the late 19th century. This included mills producing paper products such as checks and money orders; leather goods; shoes; wagon wheels; screws; nails; soap made from olive oil or beeswax blocks heated until it turned into lather; soap production increased when cheap water supplies became available in response to improved transportation methods developed by General George Sutter during his tenure as governor of California (1849-1855). During World War II munitions factories were built at nearby Hercules Plants Number 6 (later renamed West Point)and Number 7 (later renamed Kaiser Machine Works), which produced munitions for both military campaigns against Japan (1941-1945)and for post-war reconstruction in Europeup through 1945 In 1955 Alameda County reached an agreement with Antioch College to establish Englewood Campus for rapid expansion of higher education within county boundaries since Antioch College was not meeting objectives set by county officials for advanced study within county limits . By 1962 there were over 200 college students at Englewood Campus After decades of growth - paralleling that of Contra Costa County overall - Walnut creek experienced Rapid Decline beginning around 1990 when many jobs left town because their companies moved out west or consolidated with neighboring cities . Many residents attributes this decline to various factors including: Global recession/ worldwide outsourcing taking away jobs from our regions/, lack of investment opportunities outside town/sales teams not being able to convert leads into sales., high housing prices making it difficult for people to afford single family homes., changing demographics resulting in more retirees living near schools instead of working outside., etc

Walnut Creek is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 41,262 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The name Walnut Creek comes from the word "walnut" which means "a small tree that produces a brown kernel that is ground into flour." In 1887, John Sutter and his brother traveled through Central Valley on their way to found Sutter's Fort at Stockton and they named their new settlement after walnuts they found while exploring the area. In 1909, Walnut Creek was incorporated as a town. On May 20 of that year, it had its first election with four-year terms for Mayor, Aldermen (4), Recorder (1), Treasurer (3) and Coroner (2). At that time only male citizens could vote in Town Meetings. In 1937, Walnut Creek became an independent city when it merged with Pleasanton.
Walnut Creek is located in Contra Costa County, California. The name was derived from the abundance of walnuts that were found here. The first European to visit Walnut Creek was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it Novella delle Palme because of the many palm trees he saw along the creek. The first recorded settlement in Walnut Creek took place in 1851 when a group of Mormons traveled down the creek and camped near its mouth. The town was founded by Mormon pioneers on May 10, 1851, and quickly gained a reputation as a dry goods and lumbering center. By 1865, Walnut Creek had become an important railroad town with stations at Brentwood (now Pittsburg), Antioch (now Orinda), and Pleasanton. In 1916, Walnut Creek became an independent city after voters approved Measure B, which allowed for self-government within Contra Costa County limits. In 1937, Walnut Creek hosted the United States Cup tennis tournament which helped increase its popularity as a cultural center. In 1944, during World War II,Walnut Creek served as an airfield for the United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force operation "Grizzly Bear".
