Walnut Creek was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century and became a thriving agricultural community with orchards, vineyards and cotton plantations. In 1907, John Brownell developed an ophthalmic lens production facility in Walnut Creek and made early contributions to eye protection technology. In 1916 he patented a design for reflex optics which allowed single eyeglasses to be worn side-by-side without disruption of vision. The John Brownell Company continued to produce high quality optical products until it merged with Seagrams Corporation in 1957. Located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, Walnut Creek is one of Northern California's most ethnically diverse cities and its economy has been based largely on agriculture, trade, and services. The origins of Walnut Creek date back to the 1800s when Rancho Santa Clara was founded by Jedediah Bogan and his brothers. They named their rancho afterwalnuts that they found growing in nearby Mount Diablo. The first Europeans to visit Walnut Creek were José Altamirano and Antonio de la Rúa y Pacheco on October 24, 1775. They established a hacienda near present-day Junta Park in what is now Walnut Creek. Spanish traders explored much of northeastern California during this time and it is likely that they visited Walnut Creek as well. In 1839, Jose Rafael Mariano opened up the first store in what is now Walnut Creek; he became known as "the Father of Walnut creek." In 1847, John Cranch opened up his own store just south of junction Street where Third Street meets Interstate 80 today; he became known as "Jock" because he always carried goods by horsepower from his shop down Third Street to be delivered to merchants along Interstate 80. In 1865, Donahue's grocery began operating; it would later become Empire Grocery Co., Incorporated which still operates today with headquarters located in Junta Park across from Sam Adams Brewery (formerly Black & Decker). In 1869, Captain George Waring arrived at San Francisco with his squadron of Ulysses S Grant's Army Corps Of Engineers and took possession of Rancho Santa Clara land northeast of town - this area now contains the Giants Stadium complex - Waring named his new holdings for himself: "Waringville". He soon developed a large orchard there which remain part of present-day Northridge Shopping Center east off I-880 between Cypress Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard (west side), also home to several other businesses including Sears Roebuck & Co., Dick's Sporting Goods, Kmart Supercenter etc.. This area became known as "Waring Acres" after Captain Waring's daughter who married early rancher Hyrum Wright...After years spent developing this property and planting walnuts on adjacent hillsides,...Hyrum Wright deed created November 11th 1906 giving all parcels within 500 feet.....This parcel includes approximately 22 acres north fronting I-880 between Cypress Avenue Eastbound lanes (south side)and MacArthur Boulevard Westbound lane (north side)...Under terms stated hereinabove map No 2 plat evidenceship that Mr Wright ever resided on said acreage...He did however reside upon said property until his death December 12th 1916 having died prior thereto January 3rd 1911
